Refrain from letting your presence be what protects your children.
It’s extremely easy to keep tabs on your children these days—you can track their phone by GPS, call them on their cellphones to check up on them, drive them to school and walk them into the building to make sure they get there safely, etc. However, this prevents a child from learning the skills necessary to survive in the adult world when you will not be there to watch over them.
Raising a child to independent adulthood is the goal of any parent. To do this, you must allow your child to develop self-awareness in their surroundings—and this can only be achieved by allowing them some freedom.
